For me relocating has also been an existential crisis. I don't miss NY but I am now an unplaced person. Everything and everyone is unfamiliar. It's unsettling on so many levels even when you know empirically you are in a better place.
I sooooo agree with you - it's a strange feeling and something I was unprepared for. In NM, you are NEVER considered a local unless your family is here for I-don't-know how many generations. I'm thinking that once we've established certain routines and sort-of root some of our energy in our new places, we'll start to feel part of it. If not, I'm moving again!....
