It helps you find peers, learn more about the field, and if it is a genre fan group, allows you to build your own fan base by publishing highly visible “fan fiction.” There’s little need to risk time and money with dodgy vanity presses or getting endless rejections from professional book agents before you have established your own support network and raised your own stylistic profile in this way.
